Understanding the New NMFC Density-Based System
The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) has transitioned to a new density-based system for classifying LTL freight, impacting over 2,000 commodities. This shift aims to provide a more standardized and equitable method for determining freight class, moving away from subjective interpretations.
The core principle of this new system is that the density of a shipment—its weight per cubic foot—will be a primary factor in assigning its class. This means that how efficiently a product occupies space in a trailer will directly influence its shipping cost, encouraging shippers to optimize their packaging and loading strategies.
How Density Impacts Freight Classification
Under the new NMFC rules, freight density is calculated by dividing the shipment's weight by its volume. This calculated density is then cross-referenced with a table to determine the appropriate freight class. Higher density shipments, meaning more weight packed into a given space, will generally fall into lower, more economical freight classes.
For example, a shipment of lightweight but bulky items might have a higher freight class due to its low density, leading to increased costs. Conversely, a shipment of dense, heavy items that fit compactly will likely be assigned a lower freight class, offering cost savings. Shippers must now pay close attention to the density of their goods to accurately classify and quote shipments.
