Big changes have arrived for LTL freight. Here's how to navigate the NMFC's new density-based system
What's Happening?
On July 19, 2025, the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system got a major overhaul. If you ship less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, this change affects you.
The NMFTA shifted to a new density-based classification system for over 2,000 commodities, moving away from many traditional product-based classes. That means your freight classes (and your shipping costs) could change, even if your products stay the same.
At Sims Global, we’re here to help you successfully navigate this transition. Our team is ready to guide you through the updates so you can avoid surprises, delays, or reclassification fees.
Why The Change?
Density has become a more accurate and fair way to determine shipping costs in LTL freight. The NMFC updates reflect that reality.
– National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA)
The freight industry is moving toward a system that aligns costs with real-world logistics. High-density shipments take up less space, while low-density freight consumes more room in trailers. This update ensures pricing reflects that difference.
What Changed?
What’s New? | Why It Matters |
New Density Scale Freight Classes | Your freight class will be tied to density, not just commodity type. |
2,000+ Items Reclassified | Common products may shift to new NMFC codes. |
Precision Required | Accurate weight & dimensions are now essential. |
How to Calculate Freight Density
Use this formula:
Density (lbs/ft³) = Weight (lbs) ÷ Volume (cubic feet)
How to Find Volume:
- Measure Length × Width × Height (in inches)
- Divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet

New Freight Class Cheat Sheet
Density (lbs/ft³) | Typical Class |
Less than 2 lbs. | 400 |
2 to 4 lbs. | 250 |
4 to 6 lbs. | 175 |
6 to 8 lbs. | 125 |
8 to 10 lbs. | 100 |
10 to 12 lbs. | 92.5 |
12 to 15 lbs. | 85 |
15 to 22.5 lbs. | 70 |
22.5 to 30 lbs. | 65 |
30 to 35 lbs. | 60 |
35 to 50 lbs. | 55 |
Over 50 lbs. | 50 |
What This Means for You
If you’re not ready, you risk:
- Unexpected reclassifications
